To qualify for SSDI, you must have worked and paid federal payroll taxes (FICA) for five of the last 10 years. You must also apply before reaching full retirement age (65-67), and you must meet Social Security’s definition of total disability, which requires the following: (1) Applicants have a medically determinable physical or medical severe impairment(s) that has lasted or is expected to last for at least one year (or expected to result in death); (2) Applicants must be unable to do the work that they did before; and (3) Applicants cannot be able to adjust to other work because of their medical condition(s).
